Berlin underground and streets

Street photos

»The streets of Berlin have aggressive names. The other day, I rode my bike past Onkel-Tom-Strasse (near Truman Platz). There’s also Hannah-Arendt-Strasse, Judenstrasse (where Berlin’s original Jewish quarter, dating to the thirteenth century, has left no trace), Neue Judenstrasse, John-Foster-Dulles-Allee (in former West Berlin), and Karl-Marx-Allee (in former East Berlin, its name changed from Stalinallee in 1961, the year the wall went up). Kissingerstrasse can be found in the same part of town as a housing complex named after Salvador Allende. It’s as if Berlin lay prostrate to history for so long that every idea and its opposite have been imposed on the city map.« – George Packer. Bildreportage, ETC Magasin, 2015
